Cruel Sea

Description

Twenty-seven years ago the Penlee lifeboat was called out to help a stricken coaster off the coast of Cornwall. In hurricane winds and sixty-foot waves the crew of the Solomon Browne made an heroic attempt to rescue those on board the ill-fated Union Star. Using actual radio recordings, eyewitness testimony and memories of bereaved family members this documentary tells the story of that tragic night.

Kiss My Pixel were commissioned to produce all the special effects and work closely on the grade to recreate the elements and freak weather that were faced on that September night in 1981. 3D models of the lifeboat, transport coaster, lifeguard helicopter and boat edges were created and composited into the extreme rough sea footage (both live action and CGI). Wind, rain and atmospheric effects were also added throughout.

The ‘pre-vis’ shows some of the accurately modelled 3D elements that were used, prior to compositing.
